He’s rotting away

An abandoned tree

That just won’t sway

And can’t be free

Slowly breathing

like a sickly child

all memories fading

Not young or wild

He won’t move on

& won’t give up

Holding on to things

Dead and gone

A lone lamppost

In a century wrong

A painful ghost

with a curious song

the strings that strum

are decaying fast

the lyrics being hum

are no more chaste

But his eyes are shut

there’s no real change

The same sweet rut

in a limited range

He would rather die

than bow to time

its fickle themes

or evil schemes

So he’s rotting away

An abandoned tree

That just won’t sway

And can’t be free
